Tailor-made surfaces Nicholas D. Spencer, ETH Zurich
Surfaces are crucial in determining many materials properties, whether it be their lubricity, their biocompatibility, or their resistance to corrosion. The attachment of small organic molecules and polymers to materials surfaces is an invaluable approach to tuning such properties. This presentation shows how such surface functionalisation can be performed on a host of different materials, and how it can be used to produce surfaces and surface structures that lend themselves to specific applications that range from enhancing or inhibiting cell growth to modifying the rheology of cement slurries.
