Guiding light for future technologies
Prof. Yuri Kivshar Nonlinear Physics Center Australian National University, Canberra (Australia) Abstract: This talk will review the research directions of our Nonlinear Physics Center in Canberra and also the Australian Centre of Excellence CUDOS (see http://www.cudos.org.au/) on the control and guiding of light in photonic strcutures. This will include the basic physics of light propagation in periodic photonic strcutures such as photonic crystals (artificially created structures with periodically varying refractive index), light control and switching in photonic circuits via Fano resonances, and novel physics of the left-handed metamaterials, including negative refraction and cloaking of electromagnetic radiation.
